Say ‘Hybrid’ and Many People Will Hear ‘Prius’ – New York Times

Mr. Darnell admits to feeling smug this year when gasoline prices spiked above $3 a gallon. But that was not the main reason he bought his car. “I have to admit that I’m a granola-crunching liberal, and I really liked the idea of minimizing the impact on the environment,” Mr. Darnell said.

The writer of this article has to be a South Park fan.

Straight dope from Fake Steve Jobs | Newsmakers | CNET News.com

Since we’re talking about big figures from your past, I’m curious: You were kind of harsh in your Woz post. Why no love for the Woz? I mean, did he really have to wait in line?
Fake Steve: Look, Woz is a nice enough guy. He didn’t need to wait in line. That’s the big misimpression. We gave him an iPhone early last week. Two of them, in fact. Then he shows up at the store as if we didn’t. He’s looking for attention, OK? And he likes to play the martyr. Frankly, I think Woz should go do some work. Start a company or something. He’s too young to be just hanging out doing nothing and dining out on his glory days. Also, just remember: Woz didn’t want to quit his job at HP to start Apple. Are you aware of that? I had to twist his arm, the big dope. His dad told him he should stay at HP and that I was a scumbag. Dumbass Woz. He’d still be at HP, or probably he’d have been laid off by now, if I hadn’t saved him. He’d be living in some ranch house in Mountain View, driving a (crappy) car, complaining about the house prices in the Bay Area.

What’s scary is that last sentence sounds like me.

Julbo USA: Eyewear : Race – Speed : Race

Julbo USA: Eyewear : Race – Speed : Race

Wired magazine recently had a very positive review for these sunglasses. I think their major edge over the competition is their range since they’ll adapt from 43% to 3% light transmittance. It looks like they might make a very good option for cycling, skiing, and perhaps even running (I’m really enamored of the light weight of my Oakley Zeros, and a pair of replacements will have to be very light to replace them). I hope they also block the wind well since the M-Frames are unparalleled in that department for non-enclosed eye protection.

Mobile Experiences: Is the iPhone really a Phone?

Mobile Experiences: Is the iPhone really a Phone?

Once the hype has died down I expect that we’ll see video consumption on iPhones and growth in video downloads – via WiFi networks, not mobile networks become the growth area. This growth in digital downloaded media consumption plays to Apple’s strengths in computers and software, and also builds a new line of consumer electronics to drive Apple’s revenue growth.

On top of the music and video potential of the iPhone, it could also become the most popular e-book reader with its large screen and intuitive interface. I could see Japanese mobile phone novel readers and new e-book devotees embracing the iPhone as their new portable reader.

Pucker Up: Is Circumcision Unnecessary Sexual Amputation? by Tristan Taormino

village voice > people > Pucker Up: Is Circumcision Unnecessary Sexual Amputation? by Tristan Taormino

They contend that by removing the foreskin, you take away the part of the penis with the most nerve endings, which serves to lubricate and protect the glans and enhance sexual sensitivity. As a result, the unprotected head of the circumcised penis becomes thick, leathery, and desensitized.

I just had the thought that this would be like sticking out your tongue and exposing it to the air full time. I’m so happy I was not unnecessarily cut.

The Raw Story | Students explain why they handed Bush letter urging ban on torture

The Raw Story | Students explain why they handed Bush letter urging ban on torture

While meeting with a group of high school seniors from the Presidential Scholars program in the East Room of the White House, President Bush received an unexpected surprise: a letter signed by 50 of them urging Bush to halt “violations of the human rights” of terror suspects held by the United States.

With the recent revelations about Cheney’s unprecedented influence as Vice-President in the White House, giving the letter to President Bush was probably as effective as giving it to Charlie McCarthy.

Micronesia GDP vs. U.S. Highway Projects

My company made its first sale ever to a client in the Federated States of Micronesia which is another U.S. protectorate in the Pacific. I saw the GDP according to Wikipedia is $277 million. Contrast that to the local 85/101 interchange project which cost $125.3 million. The U.S. still has a lot of tax dollars at work on their roads.

Changed DNS on wireless router at home to OpenDNS

After some strange connection behavior over the past few days, I switched the dns on the wireless router at home to OpenDNS and everything works fine now. I thought that might be the problem when I was able to receive email through Outlook without any problem, but resolution of host names through my browser was intermittent.

42:26 up Montebello Road

The weather was perfect for riding up Montebello Road in the early evening on the longest day of the year. I rode my Merlin Works CR 3/2.5, and the 39×25 was a bit too high of a gear for the steepest parts of the climb. Instead of a smooth spin, I was grinding in a low, non-optimal cadence on the steep sections. I hit the school in 18:48, and I thought I might be able to bring it under 42 at the top, but I just didn’t have it tonight. I think I have a chance at breaking 40 minutes later on this year if I ride the Trek with its low gear of 34×25, better fitness, and lower weight.
