USATODAY.com – Caller ID spoofing becomes all too easy

I’ve been happy that Vonage has Caller ID at no extra charge. I guess you can’t trust the Caller ID anymore.

Riding in hurricane force winds!

I don’t think it was that windy last night, but it was the windiest weather I’ve ever ridden in during my bike commute. I didn’t stand up on my pedals on the uphills, and I really had to upshift when I was riding directly against the wind. The rain was coming down sideways, and a half mile from home, my eyes started tearing because someone had a fire going, and I think the rain was bringing down the ash and smoke into my eyes. I heard that Angel Island experienced winds of 98 mph last night. Tonight, it’s going to be calm, but it will rain again Wednesday through Friday. I’m glad they had the Tour of California last week when the weather was a lot nicer.

2 Gb – the new memory standard

A Look At AMD’s Socket AM2 Platform | Tom’s Hardware

RAM Needed!

Most computers today are equipped with 512 MB or 1 GB of memory. While a gigabyte still seems to be fairly enough, we predict that 2 GB will be the reasonable minimum for those who want to do more than just occasional gaming or browsing the Internet by the end of this year. This not only applies to particular applications and their increasing demands for RAM (let’s not forget Microsoft Windows Vista either) but will be the consequence of changing user behavior as well. Dual and multi core processors provide enough performance to process multiple tasks simultaneously, and they help to eliminate annoying system delays even with more and more services running in the background. So why should users think of shutting down demanding applications before launching other programs?

They won’t! A few weeks ago I caught myself running a multitude of programs on my desktop PC. This is something I would not have done two years ago, because system responsiveness would have been poor. Thanks to the dual core processor there is enough performance to run and switch tasks, and 2 GB or of more system memory makes sure application data does not get swapped to the hard drive.

The new work PC I’m building has 2 Gb (2×1 Gb) of RAM. I think this will be the new business standard for those who have multiple apps open during the day.

Oscar Watch: Moving Howl to America

Oscar Watch: Moving Howl to America

Interesting post on the Disney distribution of Studio Ghibli’s films. I love Miyazaki’s works, and I’m very happy that they’re a lot easier to find in the U.S. now due to Disney’s distribution. The strong female characters in his films are a great inspiration for my daughter.

Quake 4 Review for PC on GamePro.com

Quake 4 Review for PC on GamePro.com

Aside from getting partially turning into a Strogg yourself–which only seems to grant health and armor bonuses–the biggest surprises thrown at you do little more than turn yourself into a high-tech Mr. Fix-it. The “twist” gets old after the tenth time you’re told the primary switch for some mega-gizmo broke, and that you need to go to a dank sub-level to flip some auxiliary switch.

Go fix that, Kane!

Go fix this, Kane!

FUCK YOU, PETER STORMARE!

I am sick of playing Quake 4 and its uninspired boss levels.

Give me the next F.E.A.R. or Half-Life sequel.

Apple/Blockbuster video distribution. This is ironic since I just renewed my Blockbuster online membership. I couldn’t pass up the price of $9.99 a month for 1 video at a time and 2 e-coupons for two free in-store checkouts.

AnandTech: Inside Newegg: They give us a Tour and you a Prize

I really love Newegg because of its customer reviews. When you’re spending a lot on a mobo or videocard, it’s nice to know how a specific model is working for other people.

$1.3 billion in sales in 2005 is pretty amazing.

I have a 40 Gb, 2×250 Gb, and recently added a 400 Gb drive to my Beyond TV / Beyond Media machine, and I thought I had a lot of hard drive space! It’s interesting to see that Beyond TV can take advantage of multiple processor cores and hyperthreading for simultaneous Smart Squeeze and Smart Skip processing. I think I’ll stripe my 2×250 Gb drives for easy access to 500 Gb since Beyond TV only writes to one folder at a time. One virtual drive will be a lot easier to deal with than two drives. My concern right now is the heat generated by 4 drives.

PRESS (E) – MAXON’s CINEMA 4D
Now Available For Intel-Based Macs

Kudos to Maxon for providing a free upgrade to Cinema 4D for Intel Macs. I’ve read that the upgrade is easy for some developers and programs (like 10 to 30 minutes easy), but a lot harder for others.
