James Stephens » The Problem With Spamassassin’s AutoWhitelist Feature

I turned off Razor and AutoWhitelist today on my Spamassassin settings in order to speed up Spamassassin checks. Some spam is still getting through when spammers flood my smtp connections and Spamassassin can’t keep up. The items that Razor caught were already way above the threshold due to other scores, so Razor was an unneccessary network check while the AutoWhitelist feature was turned off due to the reservations stated in the article above.

The JonBenet case, examined. By James R. Kincaid – Slate Magazine

The JonBenet case, examined. By James R. Kincaid – Slate Magazine

For kids really do not fare very well in our culture: Millions of children are, in fact, abused in unspeakable ways. Five hundred thousand kids every year are classified as “throwaways” (children whose parents or guardians will not let them live at home, as distinguished from “runaways”). As many as 800,000 are beaten horribly. Even more are subject to emotional abuse and neglect. How much attention do they get? Instead, we focus our attention, almost all of it, on stranger-danger: things like abductions, of which there are between 100 and 200 annually. Our carefully controlled outrage is generated for our own purposes, certainly not to protect the children.

As the quote above shows, media and our society are drawn more to the shocking and infrequent than to the boringly horrific.

Firedoglake – Firedoglake weblog » Note to Joe: You Get What You Paid For!

Firedoglake – Firedoglake weblog » Note to Joe: You Get What You Paid For!

The first hosing company we went with was on a shared hosting account. This is the same thing that Joe has with MyHostCamp (a shared hosting account is exactly what it sounds like – numerous websites are hosted on a single server/computer). Numerous times throughout the day, we would go down. This was due to the number of hits coming in during a short amount of time. Every time a page is viewed, the server has to make thousands of calculations to process all that information and generate the page. This will have one of two possible end results; A). The processor overloads and the server shuts down or B) your account gets suspended for excessive processor usage. It is safe to say that Joe was hit by option B.We then moved from there to another hosting company, where we had a dedicated server. This meant that the only site coming off of that server was FDL. Of course with the number of visitors this site receives, we were also overloading and at times shutting down. Again – this was from excessive processor usage.

Finally we moved to where we are now and have two separate servers hosting this site and everything is running much smoother. We still hit very busy times where the site is slow to load, but we are staying up 99% of the time now.

I wonder how much of the shutdown was due to bandwidth overload vs. processor overload, since ISPs usually charge by the amount of bandwidth. Of course, if the backend of the site is getting hit hard (LAMP configuration) and can’t keep up with the load, then bandwidth overload is a moot point.

Daily Kos: CT-Sen: Why Lieberman’s site is down

Daily Kos: CT-Sen: Why Lieberman’s site is down

But now I have the definitive answer as to why Lieberman’s site went down.

They are paying $15/month for hosting at a place called MyHostCamp, with a bandwidth limit of 10GB. MyHostCamp is currently down, along with all their clients.

Here’s the deal — you get what you pay for. My hosting bill is now over $7K per month. A smaller site doesn’t need that much bandwidth, but if you’re paying $15 because your $12 million campaign is too freakin’ cheap to pay for quality hosting, then don’t go blaming your opponent when your shitty service goes out.

Amazing if it’s true. Get an account at Rackspace or an account with a lot more bandwidth. Geez!

Apple – Mac Pro

Apple – Mac Pro

I like the new Mac Pro with the dual Xeons. The item that I like the most about the new machine is the room for 4 drives. The room for only 2 drives in the old G5 towers was inadequate for many users. Even at $2,199 for a dual 2 Ghz configuration, I think the computer is still too pricey for much of the market. People will say take a look at the Mac mini or the iMac, but I don’t like the lack of expansion capabilities with either machine. What would be an awesome machine at MacWorld 2007 is a smaller size tower with core 2 duo. This is a machine that could really grow market share. Of course, there would be cannibalization of the Mac Pro market, and that might be the reason why a smaller Mac Pro with core 2 duo never comes out.

Gibson’s Anti-Semitic Tirade — Alleged Cover Up – TMZ.com

Gibson’s Anti-Semitic Tirade — Alleged Cover Up – TMZ.com

TMZ has learned that Deputy Mee audiotaped the entire exchange between himself and Gibson, from the time of the traffic stop to the time Gibson was put in the patrol car, and that the tape fully corroborates the written report.

I really need this tape for my iPod. It would bring me immense joy with many repeated listenings.

The report also says “Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he ‘owns Malibu’ and will spend all of his money to ‘get even’ with me.”

Wow, I knew Mel was rich, but I didn’t know he also owned Malibu. What an asshole.

Google WiFi Mountain View Coverage Map

Google WiFi Mountain View Coverage Map

Coverage of Google WiFi Mountain View access points shows that one of the access points is right next to my home. I’ll have to check it out when it goes live to see what type of upload and download speeds I can receive. This will be a nice backup to the cable modem signal I receive right now.

Final Fu

Final Fu

This show is hilarious since the girls are so outmatched by the guys. I saw the episode where the twins were beaten badly by their respective male opponents. In the  obstacle course competition, the girls also come in dead last. Comic books and action movies notwithstanding, women just aren’t built to fight like men.

Landis attacks in mountains, climbs to third

Landis attacks in mountains, climbs to third

I told him how much I was looking forward to Saturday’s time trial, when he would have the opportunity to salvage something from a Tour gone awry.

His smile came back. “You know,” he said, “we may be able to get some of that time back today.”

He meant every syllable of that. Somehow, word got out in the peloton that the Phonaks were going to try something preposterous. By doing so, they would be inflicting suffering on the rest of a Tour-weary bunch. Which explains why a number of riders coasted up to Landis before the first mountain, imploring him not to attempt something so foolhardy. As Landis would later recall, “I just told ’em, Go drink some Coke, ’cause we’re leaving on the first climb if you want to come along.'”

Go for broke, Floyd. Go for broke.
