Infrastructure breakdown

First, I’m denied entry to the local YMCA yesterday night since they have a gas leak (I noticed the PG&E truck out front, but I thought it was just doing routine maintenance). Then, this morning, I hear they shut down BART for awhile since there was a computer error. These little breakdowns to our infrastructure can really mess things up, and lately, I keep getting reminded that the 100th anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake is coming up.

‘Unit’s’ military expert has fighting words for Bush

My wife and I love the gravitas that Dennis Haysbert exudes in “The Unit”. Here’s an interesting short interview with a founding member of Delta Force who’s an executive producer and technical advisor for the show.

A History of Violence – Gore Noir

I watched the A History of Violence last night, and I thought of the term “Gore Noir” when I was thinking about the movie this morning. It appears that other people have come up with the term before, but David Cronenberg’s film perfectly fits it. The scenes of violence and gore are classic Cronenberg, but the two sex scenes, especially the second one, are among the most erotically charged I’ve ever seen in a major movie. I had read the graphic novel before watching the movie, and I liked how the screenwriter streamlined the plot. If you read the graphic novel, there are some grand guignol qualities toward the end of the novel  that were well left out that would have put the movie over the top and taken away from the major themes of the movie.

The song Randy trains to is “You’re the Best”, which is the training montage song used in The Karate Kid. Randy can be heard singing the chorus of “I’m [You’re] the best, around” when he is fighting Bat Dad.

Thank god for Wikipedia. I was wondering where that goofy song was from that episode of South Park. Now I want it on my iPod!

Where is the seminal S.F. movie of the 2000s?

Where is the seminal S.F. movie of the 2000s?

In the 1960s, it was 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

In the 1970s, it was Star Wars (1977).

In the 1980s, it was Bladerunner (1982).

In the 1990s, it was The Matrix (1999).

Will we have to wait till the end of the decade for the defining S.F. movie of the 2000s? I still haven’t seen a S.F. movie this decade that I’ve wanted to watch over and over again which made me think of the backstory of the characters and environment. Congratulations to Harrison Ford in his starring roles in both Star Wars and Bladerunner.

OpinionJournal – Peggy Noonan

OpinionJournal – Peggy Noonan

The money quote:

Back to Mr. Bush in 2000. I believe it is fair to say most Republicans did not think George W. Bush was motivated to run for the presidency for the primary reason of cutting or controlling spending. But it is also fair to say that they did not think he was Lyndon B. Johnson. And that’s what he’s turned into.

Massive spending and quagmire of a war. President Bush, you didn’t inherit either problem.

Store reports Allen admitted fraud

Store reports Allen admitted fraud

Claude Allen, with a $161,000 annual salary, decides to commit a pretty pathetic fraud for little gain. I’ll never understand why people commit small crimes when the penalties can be so relatively large. If you’re going to commit a crime, go for a big score.

DARWIN’S NIGHTMARE by Hubert Sauper

My brother and I used to keep Rift Lake cichlids. Their color and behavior make them very interesting fish. Unfortunately, the Nile Perch has taken over much of their habitat.

The Silence of Bush – The president didn’t ask a single question during the leaked Katrina briefing. Should that worry us? By John Dickerson

The Silence of Bush – The president didn’t ask a single question during the leaked Katrina briefing. Should that worry us? By John Dickerson

The key to why I think Bush is such a failure as a President and a leader. His down home manner appeals to many, but there doesn’t seem to be much behind the facade.
