Mountain View Voice : Replacement workers force end to BMW strike

Mountain View Voice : Replacement workers force end to BMW strike

After eight weeks of picketing along El Camino Real with no pay, striking service writers and mechanics at BMW of Mountain View have come to an agreement with owner AutoNation.

The workers were forced to make a compromise when an overwhelming number of replacement workers began crossing the picket line to take the union jobs. The replacement workers will stay, but many who stood faithfully on the picket line will have to go — a total of 22 mechanics and three service writers.

Needless to say, many of the union workers were infuriated by the situation.

“I walked on the sidewalk for eight weeks without a paycheck and I got a contract for those guys inside,” said mechanic Mike Romano.

Jimmy Hoffa’s rolling over in his grave.

Ohio Model Planes :: Innovative Products for Model Aviation

Ohio Model Planes :: Innovative Products for Model Aviation

I really like the graphics on the Stiffys and Shock Flyer. There’s just too many cool looking planes out there! The snakeskin covered EPP is very interesting. I like the use of carbon and the landing gear in the Stiffys. Ah, still have to build and maiden a Cox Christen Eagle and a MS Composite Boom!

Varathane coating for foam planes – Cox Christen Eagle particularly

I’m receiving the Cox Christen Eagle biplane today which is made out of foam with water applied decals. They suggest coating the decals with Testor’s clear cote to protect the decals, but it looks like I can use the can of Varathane in the garage for that. I hope the Varathane is still in good shape since it’s been in the garage for 6 years. There’s a good answer at the following link on the use of Varathane:

Where can I find a good acrylic sealer similar to Testors Dull Cote? – Yahoo! Answers

Nike Zoom Victory Review

I was really excited about trying these shoes, but I’ll be returning them because of two reasons:

1. Not enough forefoot cushioning

2. The skin around my left achilles tendon was rubbed raw after running only 2 miles with this shoe. There’s not enough cushioning on the upper part of the heel cup, and it scrapes my skin there.

I think the best part of the shoe is the Flywire technology since the upper of the shoe feels very light, yet supportive. Nike should start incorporating that technology in their shoes with more cushioning.

RC Flight updates

I finished building a Tribute FX 3D last weekend, but I was too eager to take it out on a windy afternoon, and it flipped over and had its nose torn off. It’s interesting to see that the nose is mainly held on to the fuselage by glue between two flat plates of balsa. I guess this helps in case you turf it so that the nose comes off cleanly in case of causing damage to the whole airframe. I think some judicious use of Sumo Glue and packing tape will get the plane up in the air again – although it will look a lot less pristine.

I received my repaired DX6i back with the proper size female pin. All I have to remember is that full charge is 5.8 volts and low charge is 4.3. What’s nice is that all it takes is 4 AA batteries in case you need a quick replacement. I was using the DX6 when I flew the Tribute FX 3D last weekend, and I like the programming features and feel of the DX6i a lot more.

I flew my repaired Stevens Aero Stik this morning, and it rose up in the air too fast. I think the angle of incidence for the wing is a little bit high, and I may try to raise the rear support in the future. For now, I’ll just mix throttle with down elevator. What was very cool to try for the first time were flaperons. I switched them on when I came in for a dead stick landing, and they slowed down the plane quite a bit at 50% settings. I’ll try to increase to 60% for the next flight.

I have a Cox Christen Eagle and a MS Composit Boom on the way. I can’t wait to get those two planes up in the air. It’s funny that originally I didn’t want to get into 3D planes and I just wanted an electric glider, but I really love the aerobatics that you can do with a 4 channel plane and 3D planes are a natural progression.

President Palmer, meet President Obama

Link via LA Times

Meanwhile, Hollywood is gearing up for pro-Obama events — concerts, parties and galas — between now and November.

A soundtrack CD with songs dedicated to Obama is in the works (think of all that musical hope available for download to your iPod.) A black and white ball is planned for Aug. 21 in Beverly Hills where celebrities are being invited to celebrate Obama’s candidacy.

(The candidate, however, will not actually be there. He will be busy working on his acceptance speech, which he’ll deliver four days later at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.)

Some of the celebrities who’ve already signed up to attend the ball, which is being organized independently of Obama’s campaign, include: Lucy Liu, Ashley Judd, Jessica Alba, Don Cheadle, Khaled Hosseini, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dennis Haysbert, Kathy Griffin, Zach Braff, Regina King, Hill Harper, Ben McKenzie, Melanie Brown and “many executives and industry professionals,” according event chairwoman Asal Masomi.

I can’t wait to see the photos of President Palmer giving a few words of advice to President Obama

Played Pixeljunk Monsters via Remote Play on the PSP

I played Pixeljunk Monsters last night via Remote Play on the PSP. It actually helped to see the whole screen on the PSP rather than on the 50″ HDTV for this game. The control wasn’t as good as the PS3 controllers, but it was acceptable. I also viewed some streaming video after I played some PJ Monsters. I did a direct link with the PS3 to to Remote Play. I’ll be very impressed if I can get good performance on PJ Monsters via remote play over the Internet. It was still quite impressive to me that I could play PJ Monsters on the PSP while Jennifer watched About a Boy on Oxygen.

Removed tape from empennage of Fik 100

I put some Fast-Pack tape on the empennage of the Fik 100 and it made the plane very tail heavy. Between the weight of the tape, and I’m assuming a worse airfoil created by the tape over the empennage, the plane flew very tail heavy. After the removal of the tape, the plane flew much better, but it went down a little bit later on when the strapping tape holding the left half of the elevator came off. This occurred because removing the Fast-Pack tape loosened the elevator tape. This morning I applied three strips of tape perpendicular instead of parallel to the hinge on each side of the elevator (left and right) so that there would be some redundancy on the tape.

Watched Cloverfield through XBox Live download

I watched Cloverfield via an XBox Live download yesterday. The cost was 320 points for a normal download and 480 points for a HD download (at $20 for 1600 points this comes out to $4 for the normal download and  $5 for the HD download). I decided to pay for the less expensive version since I wanted to see whether the lower priced quality looked good on a 50-inch 720p screen and since the story of the film was supposed to be shot through a camcorder, I figured less than optimal resolution on the screen wouldn’t matter. The download size was between 900 Mb and 1 Gb, and I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of obtaining the movie, and its video quality. Red Box would have been cheaper at $1 a movie rental, but I had just run the Upper Wildcat Loop at Rancho San Antonio, and I didn’t want to go to Nob Hill to get the movie. I have a few other unwatched movies around the house, but I really wanted to watch Cloverfield.

Cloverfield was fun to watch – especially the special effects portraying the destruction of New York. Jessica Lucas and Odette Yustman were also very easy on the eyes as most twenty something women living in Manhattan in movies tend to be.

Fik 100 with Fast-Pack.com tape

I covered the wing of my Fik 100 with Fast-Pack.com tape last night (red and orange on the bottom and yellow on top), and it looked very nice on its morning flight today. The tape isn’t super-tight, but it sticks on fine. I also put red around the nose to cover up all the excess glue from my repairs. The red nose and bright wings really help with orientation at a distance.
