San Jose Mercury News | Fry’s Electronics

You can tell if you’re a nerd in Silicon Valley if you pick up the San Jose Mercury News and the first thing you go to are the Fry’s ads on the back of each section. Of course, you could always go online at the link above and view the ads if you don’t want to kill trees. The online ad is pretty cool since you can mouse over a specific item, and it zooms in to give you an expanded view of that particular item.

Phony Theory, False Conflict

Phony Theory, False Conflict

Great column on Intelligent Design. This last paragraph says it all. Yes Virginia, you can believe in God and evolution:

How ridiculous to make evolution the enemy of God. What could be more elegant, more simple, more brilliant, more economical, more creative, indeed more divine than a planet with millions of life forms, distinct and yet interactive, all ultimately derived from accumulated variations in a single double-stranded molecule, pliable and fecund enough to give us mollusks and mice, Newton and Einstein? Even if it did give us the Kansas State Board of Education, too.

Digital Warfighter » Off the Fence and Off the Cuff

Digital Warfighter » Off the Fence and Off the Cuff

This post reflects my view on the situation in Iraq. Those who serve in the military are asked to make the ultimate sacrifice for the United States and its ideals. Do not waste their lives.

Official Google Blog: First Base

Official Google Blog: First Base

I’d love to hear how the backend of Google Base is set up since I set up the databases here at work, but I guess that will remain a company secret. This is a nice use though of Googles multitude of machines.

Iraqi insurgents use sophisticated technology in bomb making

insurgent explosive material

After reading about the attack this morning that killed 73 people through two bombers with explosive mounted on their waists, I did a Google search on “insurgent explosive material” and found this article on how the insurgents are now using shaped charge booby traps that can penetrate 4 inches of armor. The lethality and ease of construction of these IEDs is frightening.

Google offers Silicon Valley home free wireless Internet – Yahoo! News

This is great as a resident of Mountain View. I wonder what the coverage and speed will be once everything’s implemented. I read somewhere else that 1,000 of Google’s employees lived in Mountain View.

AnandTech: Inside Microsoft’s Xbox 360

AnandTech: Inside Microsoft’s Xbox 360

xbox360picture

In order to keep the Xbox 360 small, they had to make an external power supply. From the picture, you can see it’s about 1/3 the size of the Xbox 360 itself! I really hate external transformers. That gray brick must also be pretty heavy.

Movies for Adults – Why Hollywood won’t make them anytime soon.

Movies for Adults – Why Hollywood won’t make them anytime soon. By Edward Jay Epstein

Here’s the money quote:

The drop in the audience in 2005 is hardly a new phenomenon. Since the advent of television in 1948, the movie audience has declined in most years. Annual ticket sales have fallen from 4.6 billion tickets in 1948 to 1.6 billion last year, even though the U.S. population has doubled.

Regarding news, I’m getting an even amount from the Internet and magazines, but I watch almost no TV. With my hobby of reefkeeping, almost all my knowledge is from the Internet these days.

Memory under memory monitor

OSXFAQ – Technical News and Support for Mac OS X

Memory Monitor show the memory usage under Mac OS X. There are 4 main components to memory usage based on the total amount of memory installed:

* Free Memory: This is memory available for use immediately by an application or the system.
* InActive Memory: This is memory that has been used, and could be used again if needed. Swappable.
* Active Memory: This is memory currently in use. Swappable.
* Wired Memory: This is memory currently in use. UnSwappable.

I was wondering what the difference was between free and inactive memory under OS X.
